ATLANTA (August 2016) – As fall gets closer and closer, every college football fan knows what that means: it’s that time of year again. Football season!
And the Georgia Bulldogs (13) will go up against the North Carolina Tar Heels (19) to open the 2016 college football season. The teams will face off on September 3 at the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta.
Kick time has been scheduled for 5:30 p.m. EST, and the game will also be televised on ESPN.
North Carolina and Georgia have met 30 times since 1895. The Bulldogs hold the winning edge in the series, with a 16-12-2 record over the Tar Heels.
For more than 40 years, the matchup between the two southern programs has been put on hold. But the two will continue the series for the first time since 1971. This game will also mark the ninth consecutive year Atlanta has opened the college football season on a national stage.
This will be each team’s second appearance in the Kickoff Classic, which also happens to be college football’s current longest-running game series at a neutral site.
In 2010, North Carolina also opened their season in Atlanta against LSU, while Georgia played Boise State in the 2011 Chick-Fil-A Kickoff game.
One of football’s newest trophies, The Old Leather Helmet Trophy, will be the prize for the winner, which traditionally wears the helmet on the field after the game. Starting with the head coach, everyone rotates wearing the helmet from player to player as the team celebrates its victory.
Most tickets are being sold through the university ticket offices, but there are 3rd party Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic tickets available to the general public.
In partnership with ESPN, the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game was created by Peach Bowl, Inc., and the game serves as a bowl-style game to start off the season, pairing two of college football’s elite programs.
